The Horticulture and Vegetable Health Units of the Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agroalimentaria de Aragón (CITA) are working on genetic improvement for resistance to' vascular fusariosis', a serious disease that affects watermelon and whose causal agent is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (Fon).  The main objective of this work is the search for varieties of watermelon that incorporate the genes of resistance to this disease. The decision taken to undertake these studies in this species, responds to the demands of the sector, increasingly interested in this cucurbitacea, in which the increase in the incidence of certain fungal pathologies is seriously affecting their production. This disease often causes the death of the watermelon plant, which considerably reduces the production and profitability of the horticultural crop fields.
