FOREST GENETICS

1.1 Studies on variation, selection, evaluation and preservation of genetic resources as a base for the elaboration of forest improvement programmes.

1.2 Definition and creation of suitable forest reproductive materials for specific environmental situations.

1.3 Conservation of genetic forestry resources with the exploration, genetic variability study and conservation in situ and ex situ of species and populations which are endangered and/or widely disseminated in the different ecosystems of Aragon or which have significant environmental importance: Abies, Fagus, Juniperus, Pinus, Populus and Quercus, amongst others.

1.4 Quantitative genetics on forestry populations and genetic diversity studies based on field tests as a base for association studies, related to the information obtained from molecular genetics.

1.5 Forest genetics based on physiological techniques regarding photosynthesis and hydric balance in situations of stress.

FOREST ECOLOGY

2.1 Hydric Relations: Study of the hydric state of the plants, influence of drought on their development and survival, movement of the water in the plants (vegetal hydraulics).

2.2 Carbon sequestration: Effect of the different stress promoting factors (excess light, droughts, nutrient deficiency, critical temperatures) on plant carbon capture capacity.

2.3 Photochemistry: Study of stability and conservation of photosystem II as a damage indicator.

2.4 Study of growth with regards to the reproduction and dendrochronological series in order to establish relations between radial tree growth and the environment.

2.5 Application of statistical spatial analysis techniques for the description and detection of structural patterns and frontiers in the distribution of arboreal masses.
